The third wing of the ninth chapter of Srimed Bhagwat Mahapurana narrates the great story of Goddess Sukanya, Daughter of king Sharyati, Who served her husband with full devotion and presented a perfect example to the world. The name of Goddess Sukanya is taken with great respect throughout India. She is counted among the ten great caring Women.

The King moves Towards The Forest

A king named Sharyati reigned in ancient Aryavrata. He was Manu's Son. He was a very kind and visionary ruler. His subjects respected him very much. He had a beautiful daughter named Sukanya. He had a lot of affection for Sukanya

To relieve the exhaustion of the work and to know the philosophy of the Sages, he decided to go towards the forest. Princess Sukanya also went to the forest with her friends.

The atmosphere of the forest was extremely mesmerising. The natural environment and the sounds of different types of animals and birds were all extremely joyful. While roaming in the forest, They all reached the ashram of Sage Chayavan. To enjoy the natural environment, Sukanya began to travel in the forest with her friends.

Hitting On The Lights Of Mud Mound 

There, Sukanya saw a mud mound. Two lights were emitting from that mound-like fireflies. It was an awful miracle for her. With Curiosity, She pierced a twig in those emissions and dispersed them. As a result, a stream of blood started flowing from those lights. Those were the eyes of Sage Chayavan and due to his stiff penance, those were appearing like a firefly from the mud mountain.

There, Sage Chayavan had been absorbed in austerity for thousands of years and his penance was unwillingly dissolved by Sukanya. At that moment, the king and his soldiers began to have abdominal pains, their discomfort began to grow, and their urine stopped passing out. When the king asked if anyone in the forest  committed any guilt, his daughter, Sukanya spoke, father, I have shattered the eyes of a Sage by mistake.

Along Sukanya the king Sharyati met with Sage Chayavan. They praised him in many forms and pleased him. The king apologized for her daughter's mistake. To repent of his daughter's blunder, King married Sukanya to Sage Chayavan and left her in his service. Then he moved to his capital.

Sukanya was a very humble girl. She accepted the old Sage Chayavan as her husband and lovingly served him. She was extremely caring about Sage Chayavan. Sukanya served the Sage for many years. Sage Chayavan was very happy with her.

Sage Chayavan decided to please Devi  Sukanya. He appointed Ashwani Kumars, the doctor of Deities and urged them to create a divine pool for him. Ashwani kumar's happily made a pool for him. Sage Chayavan old age disappeared after taking bath in that divine pool. He came out from that pool as a very handsome young man.

Sukanya became happy to see him. Both of them thanked Ashwani Kumars. They praised them in many manners. Ashwani Kumars  went to heaven by giving them many blessings.

After some time, King Sharyati came to the ashram to meet his daughter. He was very angry at her daughter by seeing her with a handsome and young man. He shouted at Sukanya and used many bad words for her.

Sukanya told her father, that he is Sage  Chayavan and he achieved the young age with the help of Ashwani Kumars. Sharyati became delighted after listening to his daughter.

Performing Som Yagna for Ashvani Kumars By Sage Chayavan

Sage Chayavan was very grateful to Ashwani Kumars and wanted to do something for them. Being a physician of Deities, The sacred juice "Somurus" was forbidden for Ashwini Kumars. Sage Chayavan assured them that he would perform the ritual of Som Yagna and provide them with the right to drink "Somurus."

With the help of king Sharyati, Sage  Chayavan performed the ritual of Som Yagya. On completion of the Yagya, he offered "Somrus" to Ashwini Kumars.

Angry With his work, Lord Indra left his "Vajraa" on Sharyati, but before it could do some harm to him, Sage Chayavan stopped the "Vajraa" on the way from the power of his penance. All the Deities praised Sage Chayavan by seeing his daring act. The Deities admitted to give "Somrus" to Ashwini Kumar's

The Divine Mixture Chayavanprash 

Pleased with Sage Chayavan, Ashwani Kumars gifted him a divine mixture made of herbs to remain healthy forever. They also described the method of making that mixture to him. For the welfare of the World, Sage Chayavan created the mixture and delivered it to the masses. The divine mixture made by him became famous as "Chayavanprash."

The Dhoosi mountain is considered to be the ashram of Sage Chayavan. It is Located near Narrnol on the border of Haryana and Rajasthan in India. There are many temples. The main temple has statues of Lord Vishnu, Sage Chayavan and his wife Devi Sukanya. Here is a pool named Chandra well. It is believed that Sage Chayavan got rid of the diseases and had attained youth here. It is an extremely delightful venue. A big fair is held here on (Somavati Amavasya) no moon day appearing on Monday.
