Description Of Time: Four Yugas, Manvantars, Kalp & Hundred Years Of Lord Brahma

Time Calculation

Time is the basis of the creation created by God. The time cycle determines and ends all the objects. All the things, substances, individuals of the World are subject to time but, time is not under anyone's purview. Time is constantly moving, it is in motion.

The ancient chronology of time is completely scientific and based on the complex composition of mathematics. It is so accurate that with this, one can know the age of the World's smallest unit, the atom to the largest unit of the World, the Supreme Father Lord Brahma.

Lord Brahma

In the eleventh chapter of the third wing of the holy book Shrimadh Bhagwat, the calculation of time has been described in detail by Sage Shukdev.

Birth Of Lord Brahma

Lord Vishnu is imperishable, unborn and sleeps in the sea, all alone, for a long time in the holocaust. When the desire to create the Universe awakens in the mind of Lord Vishnu a lotus flower emerges from his navel, from which Lord Brahma is born. Lord Brahma gets the vision of Lord Vishnu after harsh penance and creates the Universe according to his wish.

Micro Unit Of Time

The smallest unit of time is an atom whose period is 37964th of a second. A molecule is formed by the union of two atoms whereas a transparent is formed by the union of three molecules, this can be seen by the rays of the Sun which fall into the room as light from the window sill. The time taken by the sun's rays to cross such three transparent is called Truti. The Truti is three hundredths (300) part of a second.

The hundredfold period of a Truti is called Veid. Three Veid equals one Love. Three Love equals one Nimesh and three Nimesh equals one Moment. Thirty (30) Moments equal to a Vipal and sixty (60) Vipal equal to a Pal.

One clock is equal to sixty (60) Pal. A clock is twenty-four (24) minutes. One hora is equal to two and a half clocks, which is equal to one hour. There are 24 hora i.e 24 hours in a day.

In this sequence, a week of seven days has been fixed. In the Indian time calculation, 15 days are considered as an aside. Scholars have prescribed two sides of a month, 'Krishna Paksha' and 'Shukla Paksha'. These aspects are determined by the decreasing and increasing phases of the Moon.

Phases of the Moon
Phases of the Moon

One month of human beings is called one day of ancestors. It is the day of ancestors in Krishna Paksha and the night of ancestors in Shukla Paksha. One season is considered two months and three seasons or six months equal one Ayan. Two Ayan are considered as a year. Ayan is determined by the position of the Sun. There are two Ayans in a year, Uttarayan and Dakshinayana.

When the Sun enters Capricorn, it is called the Uttarayan period. When the Sun enters Cancer, it is called the Dakshinayana period. From 14 January to 21 June, there is Uttarayan time and from 22nd June to 13th January is the time of Dakshinayan.

The time of Uttarayan is the day of the Deities and the time of Dakshinayan is the night of the Deities. A day of Deities is equal to one year of human beings. The period of 360 years of human beings is equalled to one year of Deities.

The Duration Of Four Yugas

While creating the Universe, the Supreme Father Lord Brahma had divided the time into four yugas, namely:
-Sat Yuga
-Treta Yuga
-Dwapar Yuga
& Kali Yuga.

The duration of a Kaliyuga is four lakh thirty-two thousand years (4, 32,000). Three sixty (360) years of human beings are equal to one year of the Deities, this period is called the divine year of the Gods, so there are 12,00 divine years of the Deities in a Kaliyuga.

The duration of Dwaparayuga is twice that of Kaliyuga i.e. eight lakh sixty-four thousand years ( 8, 64,000 ). There are 2400 divine years of the Deities in Dwaparayuga.

The duration of Tretayuga is three times that of Kaliyuga i.e. twelve lakh ninety-six thousand years (12, 96,000 ). There are 3600 divine years of the Deities in Tretayuga.

The duration of Satyayuga is four times that of Kaliyuga i.e. seventeen lakh twenty-eight thousand years ( 17, 28,000 ). There are 4800 divine years of Deities in Satyuga.

  • Kaliyuga = 4, 32, 000 years
  • Dwaperyuga = 8, 64, 000 years
  • Tretayugs = 12 96, 000 years
  • Satyuga = 17, 28, 000 years

Description Of Manvantara

When time completes one cycle of Satyuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparyuga and Kaliyuga, then it is called a Chaturyuga having a duration of forty-three lakh twenty thousand (43, 20, 000) years.

When Chaturyuga elapses seventy-one (71) times, one Manvantara is formed. One  Manvantara is equalled to seventy-one (71)Chaturyugas.There are fourteen (14) Manvantaras in a day of Lord Brahma. In every Manvantara, a Manu is born and that Manvantara is named after him.

At the beginning of every Manvantara new Manu, Indra, and the seven Sages appear. After the completion of the Manvantara, the old Manu, Indra and all the Deities with Seven Sages disappear in Lord Brahma. New kings and new countrymen are born during this period.

Six Manvantars have passed since The Supreme Father Lord Brahma created the World and the seventh Vaivasvata Manvantar is currently going on whose Manu is Vivasawan, the Son of Lord Sun

The name of the present-day Indra is Purandara and the Sages
-Atri,
-Gautam,
-Vasistha,
-Bharadwaja,
-Kashyapa, and
-Jamadagni
are the seven Sages of present Vaivasavata Manvantara.

There are fourteen (14) Manvantaras in a day of Lord Brahma. Their names are as follows:

1= Swayambhuv Manvantara
2= Swarochit Manvantara
3= Uttam Manvantara
4= Tamas Manvantara
5= Revit Manvantara
6= Chakshush Manvantara
7= Vaivasvata Manvantara (Present Manvantara)

Future Manvantaras

8= Savarni Manvantara
9= Bhotya Manvantara
10= Rochya Manvantara
11= Brahmsaverni Manvantara
12= Rudrasaverni Manvantara
13= Merusaverni Manvantara
14= Dakshasaverni Manvantara

At the end of all the Manvantaras, the creation and the people are destroyed. Almost at the beginning of the new Manvantara, Lord Vishnu takes incarnation and re-establishes the religion and the World. At the beginning of Vaivasvata Manvantara, Lord Vishnu had saved the Earth by incarnating as Lord Varaha, hence this Kalpa is known as Shweta Varaha Kalpa.

At present, the twenty-eighth (28) Kaliyuga of Vaivasvata Manvantara is going on and Lord Brahma has completed fifty (50) years of his age and absorbed in the creation of the Universe in fifty-one (51) years of age.

Description Of Kalpa

The day of Lord Brahma is called a Kalpa, it is the biggest unit of time. When fourteen (14) Manvantaras and six (6) chaturyuga are completed, then one day of Lord Brahma is completed, this is called a Kalpa.

  • There are seventy-one (71) Chaturyugas in one Manvantara and
  • 71×14 = 994 Chaturyugas in fourteen (14) Manvantaras
  • The six (6) Chaturyugas are the junction period.
  • In this sequence, there are 994+6 = 1,000 one thousand Chaturyugas in one Kalpa.
The duration of a Chaturyuga is forty-three lakh twenty thousand years (43,20,000). Therefore, the duration of one Kalpa is 43, 20,000 × 1000 = 4, 32, 000, 000 four billion thirty-two crore years.

This time is called a day of the Supreme Father Lord Brahma, after this, the night of Lord Brahma begins, which is as long as a day. Life on Earth comes to an end in the night of Lord Brahma, this is called Nitya Holocaust. When the night period of Lord Brahma is over, He wakes up again and creates the Universe again.

In religious texts, the age of Lord Brahma has been described as one hundred (100) years. In his hundred years of life, Lord Brahma creates the Universe every day. A day of Lord Brahma is called a Kalpa in which there are one thousand (1000) Chaturyugas

in this sequence, there are three hundred sixty (365) kalpas in a year of Lord Brahma which is equal to three lakhs sixty thousand Chaturyuga. Therefore, there are thirty-six thousand five hundred (36500) kalpas or three crores sixty-five lakh chaturyugas in the hundred years life span of Lord Brahma. This is such a long period that no instrument can calculate the number of years of this duration.

On completion of this period, the life of the Lord Brahma is completed. This is the time of the great deluge. At this time the whole Universe starts burning. The God of destruction, Lord Shiva appears and consumes the entire Universe.

Thereafter, Lord Brahma all the Deities and the entire creation merge into Lord Vishnu. By the grace of God, only water pervades in the entire Universe and In that lonely water, Lord Narayan sleeps for many kalpas.

Lord Narayan is unborn and imperishable, so after passing thousands of Chaturyugas, when the desire of creating the Universe again awakens in the mind of Lord Narayan, a lotus flower appears again from his navel and Lord Brahma is born and Lord Brahma again creates the Universe by the wish of Lord Narayan.
