The Story Of Lord Dattatreya

Story of Lord Dattatreya

The Son of Lord Bramha Sage Attri and his wife Devi Anusuya were high-quality seekers. They proved with their chanting, austerity, and fasting, that an ordinary person can also attain divinity. Their reputation was echoed throughout the Universe. It was not acceptable to the Trinity that it was unbelievable how an ordinary person could be so great.

Assessment Of Devi Anusuya By Tridev

Tridevis decided to take the test of Anusuya. Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Parvati asked their husbands to take the test of Anusuya. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva reached at Sage Attri's ashram in the garb of Sages.

In the ashram, Devi Anusuya welcomed them and asked them to receive the offerings. The three seekers spoke, if you feed us naked, then only we will receive your offerings.

With the power of her penance, Devi Anusuya had known that they were Tridev and had come to the ashram to take her test. Devi Anusuya made the world's Generator Lord Brahma, Operator Lord Vishnu and the Destroyer Lord Shiva an infant with the power of her penance. She breastfed the three infants and left them to play in the ashram.

Even after a long time, Tridev did not returned. It was very worrying for Tridevis. They reached to  ashram and saw Tridevas  were playing with Devi Anusuya as an infant.

The Trinity Goddesses were deeply influenced by Devi
Anusuya and bowed down to her. They requested her to get their husbands. Thereafter, she established the three Deities in their original form by the power of her penance.

Tridev became very happy with the power of Anusuya and asked her to seek blessings. Devi Anusuya wished that the three Deities should be born as her Sons. Tridev said, In time, they will be born as her Sons.

In time, three Sons of Sage Atri were born from Devi Anusuya. The Supreme Father Brahma was born as Lord Chandra (Moon). The embodiment of the anger sage Durvasa originated from the part of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu was born as Lord Dattatreya on the full moon day of the month of Margashies, (November).

The childhood of Chandra, Dattatreya, and Durvasa was spent in the proximity of father Atri and mother Anusuya. When they grew up Lord Chandra went to his special folk Brahmlok. There, Lord Brahma created a new folk for him, which was named Chandra Mandal.

Durvasa was very angry, he used to curse the people in anger, but this would weaken his austerity power so his father instructed him to do the penance of Lord Shiva.

Dattatreya was absorbed in austerity all the time. After his two brothers left the ashram his mother Anusuya was very fond of him. She did not want to let him leave the ashram. But Dattatreya was born for the welfare of the world and he needed to leave the ashram.

Eliminating Mother's Illusion

Once Dattatreya was absorbed in austerity, his mother came to see him, but she saw her Son Chandra was worshipping in the place of Dattatreya. She felt surprised and in a haggle she called Dattatreya. She noticed now Durvasa was doing penance in the place of Chandra

Watching this, Devi Anusuya became extremely amazed. Dattatreya gave the vision to his mother of his form which was a combined form of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Dattatreya told his mother, he is born for the welfare of the world, so, therefore, she should renounce her spirit and allow him to go from the ashram.

The Vision Of Lord Dattatreya

Receiving blessings from his parents, Lord Dattatreya left the ashram. While walking, he arrived near a river and saw some Sages sitting in a boat to cross the river. Dattatreya asked those Sages to allow him to sit in the boat. But even after the place in the boat, they did not allow Lord Dattatreya to sit in the boat and they all disdained him.

The boat had gone and Lord Dattatreya was still standing at the bank of the river. The Sages on the boat were laughing at him. Dattatreya started walking on the water and crossed the river on foot. All the Sages were very surprised to see his work and recognize him as an enlightened man. After crossing the river Lord  Dattatreya sat under a tree. All the Sages approached him with the aim of making him a Guru.

Lord Dattatreya had known that these Sages greet the miracle and so they were coming towards him. Seeing them coming to him, Lord Dattatreya jumped into the river and went inside the river. All the Sages began to wait there.

After a long time, Dattatreya came out of that river with a very beautiful woman. The beautiful young woman sat on his lap while offering him whisky. Then those Sages thought that he is a Hippocrates so all the Sages went from there. Dattatreya had created an illusion (Maya) to test the Sages that they could not understand.

Then Lord Dattatreya went to an unknown place and became absorbed in austerity. He did harsh austerity and gained many powers. He learned from every particle of the Universe. He selects 24 mentors for himself which are as follows:

Earth, Moth, Whore named Pingla, Pigeon, Deer, Sea, Elephant, Sky, Honey bee, Fish, Turtle, Bird, Fire, Virgin girl, Child, An arrow maker, Moon, Water, Boa, Snake, Air, Spider, Brian worm and Bumblebee.

In search of Indra,  Demon Jambh reached in the ashram of Dattatreya. In the ashram, he saw an elegant young woman and he was fascinated by seeing that divine woman. She brought him in front of Dattatreya by putting him in talks. On seeing Demon Jambh Lord Dattatreya nullified his boon with the power of his penance.

Jumbh had forgotten everything by looking at the siren woman, he was not even aware that his blessing had been nullified. Jumbh invited the woman to go with him. That siren quote, if he takes her to his head only then she will go with him. Jumbh revealed a sail through Maya and asked the woman to sit in that sedan. The woman sat in that sedan and Jumbh put the sedan on his head and went from there.

Indra came to Dattatreya and told him,  Jumbha has gone with that divine lady.  Dattatreya  said, She was Goddess Lakshmi  and had come here with his inspiration. He told, Goddess  Lakshmi destroys everything of a person when she sits on the head of a person. "Dattatreya  ordered Indra to kill Jumbha.

Indra challenged Jambh for the war and soon he killed him. The Deities expressed gratitude towards Dattatreya and Goddess Lakshmi. Lord Dattatreya gave a vision of his form to all the Deities. The Deities became happy and obliged.

Accepting Sahastrarjuna As A Disciple

The Son of Kartverya, Arjuna was looking for a worthy mentor who could remove the disorientation of his mind. With the inspiration of his Rajguru, he went to the shelter of Lord Dattatreya. Dattatreya took his test and told him to bring a flower for him.

Even after making several efforts, he could not get any flower. Then he cut his head and paid it to Dattatreya as a gift. Dattatreya became very happy and blessed him to have one thousand arms. Lord Dattatreya told him that no one would be able to defeat him as long as he continues on the path of religion.
