Length of river Ganga in different states

The holy river GANGA originates from Gomukh situated in the westernmost part of Himalayas and flows in states of UTTAR PRADESH, BIHAR, WEST BENGAL and finally falls into BAY OF BENGAL.

The total length of the river is 2601 kilometres approx. 


     Length of RIVER GANGA in different states:-

  • Uttarakhand (North-Eastern state of the total area - 53,483 km square):-When the River Bhagirathi originates from the Gomukh Glacier, it travels 205km and meets the Alaknanda River in Devprayag. The river that is formed from the confluence of both the rivers is the Ganges. The river Ganga, starting from Devprayag travels almost 96km to Rishikesh via Haridwar further from Uttarakhand to reach Uttar Pradesh. 
  • Uttar Pradesh (Northeastern state of total area 2,43,286 km square):-This auspicious river enters the state through Bijnor district and finally exits from ballia via Varanasi. Its length here is 1140 km.

The river acts a boundary of length 110 km between Uttar Pradesh and Bihar 
  • Bihar (Northeastern state of area 152.9 km square):-The river Ganga flows through the middle of the state starting from Buxar and finally exiting the state at Baghalpur. The river covers the length of 405 km.
  • Jharkhand (Eastern state covering the total area of 79,714 km square):-The length of river Ganga is 40 km in length. Sahebganj is the only district from where River Ganga passes.
  • West Bengal(Eastern state of total area 88,752 km square):-The river Ganga splits here into two rivers in Murshidabad district: Padma(flows towards Bangladesh) and Hooghly(flows in southward direction). The length of River Ganga in this state is 260 kilometres.         

  •  THE ENTRY OF RIVER GANGA INTO BANGLADESH


After entering Bangladesh, the river is renamed as Padma river. The length of the river in Bangladesh is 350km.

Finally, this pious river enters into Bangladesh forming the world's largest Delta i.e, GANGA BRAHMPUTRA DELTA  which is of area 1,00,000 kilometre square. The delta is formed by two rivers - GANGA and BRAHMAPUTRA (known as TSANGPO in CHINA) This delta is also known as the SUNDARBAN DELTA due to the large variety of MANGROVE species.
